Near real-time observations from South Australia’s Harmful Algal Bloom coastal monitoring network are now available through the Australian Ocean Data Network, expanding the data available through the IMOS Estuarine and Coastal Moorings Facility.
Federal and state government funding has enabled the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) to install the current South Australian Harmful Algal Bloom monitoring network, established as part of the new Office of Algal Bloom Research. The coinvested near real-time mooring network currently consists of six coastal sites in key locations across South Australia, with a seventh site to be established in the Port River.
The moorings collect observations of water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and other water quality variables at 15-minute intervals. These observations provide near real-time information on changing coastal water conditions and support monitoring of harmful algal blooms.
The data are being contributed to the Estuarine and Coastal Moorings Facility as an in-kind contribution, helping expand Australia’s near real-time coastal and estuarine observing network. The data is now available through the IMOS Australian Ocean Data Network and will soon also be available through IMOS Live.
