Data Licencing

IMOS data, and the majority of AODN data, is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License

IMOS Data Acknowledgement

Any users of IMOS data are required to clearly acknowledge the source of the material in the format: “Data was sourced from Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) – IMOS is enabled by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).  It is operated by a consortium of institutions as an unincorporated joint venture, with the University of Tasmania as Lead Agent.” If relevant, also credit other organisations involved in collection of the particular datastream (as listed in ‘credit’ in the metadata record).

  • The citation in a list of references is: “IMOS [year-of-data-download], [Title], [data-access-URL], accessed [date-of-access].”

AODN Data Acknowledgement


The AODN, via one of its main objectives, encourages and develops the culture of data sharing across the marine science community of Australia.

When using data from the AODN please acknowledge use and credit organisations involved in the collection of the data stream.

Full detail of the required citation and acknowledgement information will be located in the metadata of the data collection.

Software Licensing

All software developed by the AODN is released under the GNU general public licence version 3 (GNU GPLv3).

The GNU GPLv3 is a copyleft license that requires anyone who distributes AODN code, or a derivative work, to make the source available under the same terms, and also provides an express grant of patent rights from contributors to users.

The licence is included in the root directory of every AODN source repository.

The licence is placed in a file called LICENSE.txt. The project’s README should include a note stating that the project is licensed under the terms of the GNU GPLv3.
