IMOS OceanCurrent upgrade to enhance access to Australian ocean data

IMOS has been working closely with the OceanCurrent Facility at CSIRO to help deliver a fresh new look for the IMOS OceanCurrent website with a beta version released on the 24th April.

For many years, IMOS OceanCurrent has been a trusted resource for visualising oceanographic conditions around Australia. It delivers a dynamic, integrated view of Australia’s marine environment, combining sea surface temperature, ocean colour, and surface wave data with overlaid sea level contours and current velocities. It supports deeper insights into ocean conditions and trends, while also providing direct access to high-quality IMOS datasets.

The upgraded platform will continue to deliver the same scientifically rigorous ocean data products, supported by  a modern and robust front end framework that enhances performance, responsiveness, navigation and stability.

The improvements to navigation and design aim to make ocean data even more discoverable, easy to use, and visually engaging. The platform also features a modern, mobile-friendly interface for improved accessibility across devices.

IMOS OceanCurrent is a valuable tool for marine scientists, educators, industry, recreational users or anyone with an interest in Australia’s surrounding seas. The new site is designed to benefit both expert users and the broader community by making high-quality ocean data more discoverable, accessible and easy to use.

“Updates to the IMOS-OceanCurrent website will improve navigation and region selection, and users will be able to access the data shown in the figure in the AODN repository with one click.”

Gabriela Semolini Pilo, Facility Lead

To ensure continuity, the new IMOS OceanCurrent platform will operate alongside the legacy version during a transition period. Users will can switch between versions via a direct link  on both sites. Once the new platform has matured and proves its reliability, the legacy version will be progressively phased out.

Please feel free to take a look and explore. You’ll also find a link to a feedback form, and we’d greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts and suggestions.
