IMOS welcomes Professor Anna Nowak to the IMOS Governing Board

Professor Nowak has taken over from Professor Tim Colmer as the board member representing the University of Western Australia.

Professor Anna Nowak is Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) at University of Western Australia (UWA), working with the UWA Executive to deliver research strategy and outcomes across the University. In 2021 she was Pro Vice Chancellor (Health and Medical Research), and in 2020, Deputy Executive Dean (Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences) and Associate Dean (Research).

Professor Nowak is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Oxford Women’s Leadership Development Program (Oxford Said Business School), and the Australian Institute of Management Consultant Development Program.

Professor Nowak’s substantive role is as a Clinical Academic in the UWA Medical School. She is also Director of the National Research Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD) and is currently on leave from her role as a practicing medical oncologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. She is a member of the Board of Directors, Cancer Council WA.

The role of the IMOS Governing Board

IMOS is an Unincorporated Joint Venture (UJV) comprised of Australia’s top marine agencies. In late 2016 seven parties – University of Tasmania, Australian Institute of Marine Science, Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO, South Australian Research and Development Institute, Sydney Institute of Marine Science and University of Western Australia – entered into the IMOS Principal Participants Agreement (referred to as the IMOS UJV). At the time of signing the parties agreed Associate Participants to be Curtin University and the Australian Antarctic Division, and since 2016 Deakin University and the University of Melbourne have also joined as Associate Participants.

The Agreement states that IMOS will be managed by the IMOS Governing Board, led by an Independent Chair. The Governing Board undertake the following functions:

  • strategic planning, overall direction, and control,
  • determining policy,
  • receipt and consideration of reports and accounts,
  • endorse entering into any new, any changes to, and monitoring of compliance with the Funding Agreements,
  • advise and assist the Lead Agent in the management of IMOS business risks,
  • oversee the communication plan and activities of IMOS,
  • maintain oversight of any major reviews or publications on IMOS,
  • provide other advice and input as required.
