A new web-interface for IMOS’s national acoustic telemetry network database

The Australian Ocean Data Network and IMOS Animal Tracking Facility are working to develop a new web-interface for the IMOS national acoustic telemetry network’s database.

The web-interface enables the IMOS Animal Tracking Facility and the Australian research community to store, explore, exchange and access nationwide animal acoustic telemetry data and metadata, thereby facilitating collaborative animal tracking research and long-term monitoring of Australian marine species.

IMOS commissioned a project to create a new web-interface for the national IMOS animal acoustic telemetry database.  As part of this project, the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) and IMOS Animal Tracking Facility carefully assessed user feedback to design a new product that would suit their ongoing needs.  The new Web-interface aims to:

  • enhance user experience, including data exploration, filtering and download functionalities,
  • improve the data entry workflow, and enhance the quality of the metadata and data records,
  • reduce data errors through enhanced validation checks,
  • enhance data sharing and collaboration opportunities for the Australian research community,
  • provide a scalable, modern, secure system with capacity for improvements and future development.

A small team from the IMOS Animal Tracking Facility recently completed the first round of testing of the available Web-interface functions, a significant project milestone.

AODN Software Engineers are now completing the development of the final functionalities, and the required adjustments identified during the first round of testing.

The Web-interface is scheduled to be released at the end of March 2021.

Contributors and users of the animal acoustic tracking data will receive additional communication as the project progresses.
