Great Barrier Reef Data Management System

A single system for connecting to Great Barrier Reef data.

IMOS is leading a project to deliver a fit-for-purpose Data Management System (DMS) for the Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program (RIMReP).

What is the Great Barrier Reef DMS?

The DMS will be critical infrastructure that underpins the Program to create a better understanding of what’s happening on the Great Barrier Reef. Also, the DMS will be a critical service in support of RIMReP’s Reef Knowledge System (https://reefknowledgesystem.gbrmpa.gov.au/)

The DMS has found more than 350 datasets containing various information such as weather and oceanographic parameters, habitat structure, water quality,  human perception of the Great Barrier Reef, coral reef monitoring, and more. Many of these datasets have been identified as high-priority data due to their relevance for key decision-making processes. Many of them could be accessed from very organised data services. Guided by prioritised use cases, the DMS creates automatic data ingestion pipelines for connecting and collecting data from the data provider.

The RIMReP Data Management System is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority with support from the Integrated Marine Observing System.

Recommendations

Mark Hammerton

“The STAC catalogue is easy to use with a clear navigation and provides a good overview of the available products. The GitHub repositories provide a good level of documentation and contain a lot of examples to work with.”

Neal Collier

“The Data Management System is an invaluable asset for analysts and decision-makers at the Reef Authority. Having a secure and stable place from which we can source critical data has allowed The Authority to streamline analytical workflows and improve decision-making timelines. Many manual and repetitive tasks of data acquisition and processing will be replaced by automated workflows because of the DMS, thus saving resources and giving decision-makers more time to focus on the results and the implications for park management. The DMS has also made a positive impact on our data governance processes through an easy-to-use metadata catalogue. The Reef Authority’s partners also stand to benefit from the DMS through increased ease of collaboration and sharing of data.”

Nicholas James

“The benefits for us have been the speed and convenience at which we can now access data, which streamlines our workflows and allows us more time to work on analysis and interpretation”
