IMOS recently hosted the 2023 Forum for Operational Oceanography (FOO) workshop in Fremantle, bringing together 109 delegates from research, industry, management, government, service providers and maritime operations to discuss new developments and partnerships in operational oceanography, with the aim of improving safety and productivity in marine industries.
The three keynote speakers covered a variety of topics. Dr Alex Held discussed CSIRO’s Aquawatch mission, Dr Claire Spillman from the Bureau of Meteorology presented on operational seasonal prediction, and Jonathan Barratt from CelsiusPro shared his insights on insurance in the Blue Economy.
The event also showcased 29 invited talks, covering sessions on waves, currents, data sharing, updates, and new developments in operational oceanography.
The strength of the forum lies in the exchange of ideas, information, and the promotion of awareness regarding needs and activities in the marine environment, and there was a strong industry presence with representatives from mining, fishing, defence, ports and shipping.
“The 2023 FOO workshop brought together researchers, service providers, industry operators and more to discuss the opportunities and challenges we are facing and how we can work collectively toward solutions,” said IMOS Executive Director, Michelle Heupel. “FOO provides a great platform for discussion, integration and collaboration.”
Thanks to all speakers and delegates who attended, and to our sponsors CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology for supporting this important forum.
The next FOO is scheduled to take place in 2025.
