International collaborations & other projects
The AODN actively engages in national and international activities that promote the use and uptake of standardised interoperable data.
We are members of the following organisations, which exchange information on developing standards:
- Research Data Alliance including a working group on Data Citation, and interest groups on Data Discovery Paradigms and Data Versioning
- International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange – the AODN Director is the Australian national representative for oceanographic data management
- International Quality Controlled Ocean Database (IODE-IQuOD)
- Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) Data Committee
Standardised metadata is important for data discovery. The AODN uses a set of controlled vocabularies for metadata tagging and has been a major contributor to the development of the vocabulary management and publishing service Research Vocabularies Australia hosted by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), which hosts the AODN vocabularies.
The field of information technology is always swiftly evolving, with innovative strategies emerging to tackle the challenges posed by the surge in data volume and the diverse methods of its delivery. The AODN works with many external organisations to exchange and collaborate on projects that explore emerging technologies.
