AODN Stack installed at Deakin University
In March an AODN staff member traveled to Geelong to help set up the AODN stack.
In early March Mr Angus Scheibner of AODN travelled to Deakin University in Geelong to assist in the set- up of an AODN infrastructure stack. As explained by AODN Director Dr. Roger Proctor “It makes sense to have AODN infrastructure in a central location in Victoria for High Value Collection’s, this subsequently allows easy harvest of Victorian State benthic biodiversity data into the AODN”.
The Australian National Data Service (ANDS) currently have multiple projects funded under the “High Value Collections” (HVC) program. A second program building on the HVC program is the “Connecting High Value Collections and NCRIS Capabilities” program, the aim of which is to connect collections that are relevant to other HVC’s and, in turn, make the data readily and freely available.
AODN infrastructure is open source and always has been, often welcoming contributions to the code but also allowing other institutions to set up the entire stack. This streamlines the process for numerous data collections to be ingested into the AODN. One of the ANDS projects, SeaMap Australia – Benthic Marine Habitats on the Australian Continental Shelf, aims to bring together all data from benthic marine habitats around the continental shelf into one database. The ANDS project “SeaMap Australia Connections” brings the two HVC projects (SeaMap Australia and the Deakin University) together. The AODN infrastructure was a perfect candidate to publish the compiled data product- one of the official aims of the project
In order to harvest SeaMap data into the AODN Portal, Mr Scheibner coached Deakin staff through the following set-up; a Geoserver instance and associated Postgres database were installed - these are required to ingest and store the raw data in Shapefile and GeoTIFF format. Flattening of the raw data into Geoserver layers came next - this is a requirement for displaying and querying the data via the AODN Portal. A test data collection was then ingested into the new Geoserver as a prototype.
A GeoNetwork catalogue was installed to store metadata for the SeaMap data collections. A prototype metadata record was created to associate with the test data collection in Geoserver. Finally, a portal application was installed to test that the data collection could be visualised correctly. With these components already set up on SeaMap infrastructure, a pathway was provided for incorporating benthic marine habitat data from Deakin into SeaMap Australia and hence into the AODN portal.
