ANFOG welcomed Josue Viera, from PLOCAN (Plataforma Oceánica de Canarias), between the 17th June and the 12th July. Josue works as a glider technician at PLOCAN and his visit was funded under a COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) action.
The overall purpose of the action was to share and advance in all organizational aspects required in a national facility for handling a large group of gliders for different purposes. In parallel, Josue focused on glider and sensors, incrementing his knowledge and expertise on gliders, as well as piloting and recovery/deployment procedures. During his stay, Josue also became familiar with IMOS data policy and ANFOG’s methods both for managing a large glider fleet and for data management.
Josue’s visit was the first step in the development of a research relationship between PLOCAN and ANFOG and was seen as a very rich experience from both sides, which could be sustained in the longer term through further student/staff exchanges and the development of future collaborations. It has also furthered the link between ANFOG and EGO (“Everyone’s Gliding Observatories“) in terms of glider data management.
