In Situ Data
All data from moored IMOS oceanographic instrumentation deployments is made available on the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) Portal.
The main purpose of this sub-facility is the ongoing calibration and validation of altimeter data within the mission science team that oversees the Jason-series satellite altimeters. The altimeter data, once it benefits from the global calibration and validation effort, is distributed to users through the main mission data centres in the USA (PO.DAAC) and in France (AVISO). The standard product is an along-track Geophysical Data Record (GDR).
A number of value added services exist for users who wish to tailor their sea surface height to specific regions, specific corrections or simpler formats. These data remain based on the original GDR that has been through a calibration and validation process. Examples include the RADS and ODES tools.
Users seeking gridded sea surface height data have a number of options that are based on calibrated and validated data.
Gridded climatic reference sea level monthly means from the reference missions (TOPEX, Jason-1 and OSTM/Jason-2) are provided by the CSIRO sea level team. This dataset is well suited for large scale signals (mesoscale variability is smoothed) and long term sea level accuracy. One netcdf file for the whole sea level history since 1993 to recent (~2.5 month after acquisition) is available from CSIRO.
Higher resolution, multimission gridded data is available from the SSALTO/DUACS system. These global datasets have 7 day sampling and are provided on 0.25 deg resolution grids. A range of products are available that include all available missions, or just the 2 primary optimised missions (e.g. Jason-1/Envisat or OSTM/Jason-2/SARAL). SSH, sea level anomaly, and u,v geostrophic velocity components are available.
Similarly high resolution 0.25 deg grids that are regionally optimised for Australia are available from the IMOS Ocean Current team.
