Marine Research Funding Announcements

The Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) is the lead agent on two marine research projects, for which successful funding was recently announced.

Further development of the Marine Virtual Laboratory (MARVL) has been enabled by the awarding of over $1 million. This incorporates $425,000 of joint funding from ANDS, Nectar and RDS as part of their Data enhanced Virtual Lab (DeVL) program for 2017/2018; with a further $75,000 in cash and $510,000 of in-kind co-investment from project partners.

Project partners include:

·         Integrated Marine Observing System Australian Ocean Data Network (IMOS-AODN) [project contract lead agent]

·         Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) Science for Services and Community Forecasts Programs

·         CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere Coastal Modelling Team

·         MetOcean Solutions Ltd NZ (MOS)

·         National Computational Infrastructure (NCI)

·         South Australia Research and Development Institute (SARDI)

·         Tasmanian Partnership for Advanced Computing (TPAC)

·         University of New South Wales (UNSW)

·         University of Western Australia (UWA)

A similarly funded project, the Marine Research Cloud project will help make marine data more accessible to researchers through cloud computing. The project will receive $600,000 of joint funding from ANDS, Nectar and RDS as part of their Research Data Cloud (RDC) program for 2017/2018; which is boosted by a further $423,000 of co-investment from project partners.

Project partners for the Marine Research Data Cloud include:

·         Integrated Marine Observing System Australian Ocean Data Network (IMOS-AODN) [project contract lead agent]

·         CSIRO (Oceans and Atmosphere)

·         University of Western Australia (School of Biological Sciences)

·         Greybits Engineering, Sydney

·         Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS)

·         Geoscience Australia (GA)

·         Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS)

·         Australian Antarctic Division (AAD)

·         Atlas of Living Australia (ALA)

·         The Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) Australian Coastal Ecosystems Facility (ACEF )

·         US Integrated Ocean Observing System (US-IOOS) Animal Tracking Network

The project also involves the Marine Biodiversity Hub, a component of the National Environmental Science Program (NESP), which provides scientific information in support of evidence-based decision making about marine species, marine protected areas, and pressures on the marine environment.
