AIM:
to revise the Science and Implementation Plan for the node. With the opportunities provided by the EIF funding we are seeking to both enhance and extend the existing activities.
To this end we have chosen to undertake this planning exercise under the science themes below. Short presentations will be made by the people indicated. To download the powerpoints of each talk click on the title.
Building on our strengths, IMOS 5-year Strategy Tim Moltmann
Broadscale Ocean State Susan Wijffels (susan.wijffels@csiro.au)
Boundary currents and Choke Points Ken Ridgway (ken.ridgway@csiro.au)
Air-sea interactions Eric Schulz (eric.schulz@bom.gov.au)
Carbon observing system Bronte Tilbrook (bronte.tilbrook@csiro.au)
Bluewater ecosystem monitoring Rob Harcourt (rharcour@gse.mq.edu.au)
Operational Modelling Gary Brassington
Seasonal Forecasting Harry Hendon
Observing the cryosphere Tony Worby
Please send any material that you would like to be included to these presenters.
To make the most efficient use of our time at the meeting on Tuesday we are setting some homework tasks. Please prepare for the meeting by considering the following questions in the light of the above themes (or any additional components)
Please remember that while we are preparing plans for this next round of EIF funding (next 4 years), we also need to have a 10 year vision.
Key Questions.
What are the gaps in the existing networks?
How do the measurements complement existing in situ and remotely sensed data streams?
What is the priority of these measurements?
Is there national capability to achieve this task within the IMOS/EIF timeframe?
Are there opportunities for co investment?
How does this activity connect to international programs, networks ?
See the series of 'white papers' prepared for the forthcoming OCEAN OBS09 meeting at http://www.oceanobs09.net/cwp/
Are there links to modelling and analysis products?
eg BLUElink, ACCESS, seasonal forecasting, decadal prediction.
This Bluewater power point presentation provides an overview and some possible components within each of the themes.
