Although not restricted to the following the observational data will have significant input to the understanding a global change that will result in reef-wide changes in physical and chemical environments that will alter the biology and structure of reefs. Examples of specific hypotheses to be framed around this monitoring include links such as:

 

sea temperatures and ecosystem health (e.g. coral bleaching, disease),

mixed layer depth, upwelling, and regional productivity,

the strength of the South Equatorial Current, connectivity, and replenishment of populations, and

changes in ocean chemistry and rates of reef construction.
