Instrumentation
X-band stations operate at a frequency of approximately 8 GHz and l-band stations operate at frequencies just below 2 GHz. Data are being acquired from the NOAA AVHRR instrument series which is a polar operational environmental satellite POES and is used primarily for the production of sea surface temperature (SST) maps. A variety of "ocean colour" products and SST will be derived from data obtained from the NASA MODIS instrument. Sometime after 2010 a new instrument called VIIRS will replace the MODIS and AVHRR data streams.
Our intention is make data products from all these instruments available online with simple interfaces to allow easy selection and access. A pilot system should be in operation in Q2 2008.
